The origins
BHDP began when Cyrus L. Baxter parlayed an association with Cincinnati Milacron into his own architect business in 1937. In his first few years, close to 90% of Cy's work was for Milacron. Over the next seven years, Cy demonstrated an uncanny ability in assessing talent when he hired Jack Hodell, Jim Donnelly and Jim Preston. Each had graduated with distinction and went on to show an artful affinity for the business and for Cy. The cadre was complete and, in 1960, they combined their names to make Baxter, Hodell, Donnelly, and Preston, Inc.
The partners expanded the firm's areas of expertise from primarily manufacturing and workplace to also include, higher education and retail with projects for clients like The University of Cincinnati and Tri-County Mall. The year 1970 saw an extremely influential partnership when BHDP completed the first of many projects for Procter & Gamble. Working elbow to elbow with one of the world's most forward-thinking companies taught us to flex our imaginations, to challenge the obvious and to see human needs as the foundation to build upon.
By the time we moved to our present location in downtown Cincinnati in 2002, we were fully formed philosophically with a portfolio of award-winning projects and a roster of over 100 of the most talented architectural thinkers, designers and relationship builders anywhere.
Today we have expanded our presence and our reach. In addition to our main location in Cincinnati, we have an office in Columbus, Ohio and Durham, North Carolina and have projects all over the world.
