BHDP provided laboratory planning expertise to Lake|Flato for a complete rethinking of the herbarium building type (and updated masterplan/strategic plan) for the North Carolina Botanical Gardens (NCBG) and UNC Chapel Hill. The UNC Plant Biodiversity Research Center Study will lay the groundwork for what will ultimately become a truly transformative herbarium building that will serve as the precedent for all forward-thinking herbaria globally (in terms of programs, sustainability, research, typology and collections).

The proposed building will house the Research Center’s personnel, research and teaching activities, and museum collections as well as provide research laboratories, office space, and seed processing facilities for the NCBG Southeast Regional Seed Bank. Public access areas for teaching related to plant systematics and plant conservation are also planned.
