Old Chemistry Building Renovation and Addition
01 Challenge
To keep pace with the many enhancements across campus, the University of Cincinnati set out to renovate and expand its Old Chemistry Building. BHDP was tasked with the restoration of the building’s original 1917 historic structure while delivering a new laboratory wing to replace the 1930s-era addition.
02 Solution
The new Old Chemistry Building now features state-of-the-art open-bay chemistry research labs and supporting research service facilities. The project also includes faculty and departmental offices for the Department of Chemistry, general-purpose classrooms, biology and chemistry teaching labs, and student and faculty collaboration spaces.

Through the 63,000 SF renovation and the 144,000 SF addition of the reimagined Old Chemistry Building, it now serves as a future-forward academic and research environment that elevates hands-on learning, supports cutting-edge research, and redefines the student learning experience.
The large, energy-efficient windows bring natural light into the research offices and lab spaces. The windows are also designed with a subtle, integrated pattern on the glazing that cues birds to the solid surface so they can avoid it.
Labs include state-of-the-art equipment, such as NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) machines, highlighting UC's dedication to cutting-edge research.
The newly designed fluids engineering lab showcases the diversity of programs and the flexibility of the lab space.
The light-filled atrium connects multiple levels of classrooms, labs, and research offices and serves as a campus pathway.
