01 Challenge

FastMed Urgent Care came to BHDP with a clear ambition: to open a clinic in downtown Raleigh that felt nothing like a traditional urgent care visit. Rather than a provider-centric model where patients seek out a specific doctor, FastMed wanted to build trust in their brand as a whole, creating a concierge experience so elevated and patient-focused that people would return to any FastMed location with confidence. Five success criteria shaped the project: transformative care, a concierge experience, a wellness environment, operational efficiency, and a patient-centric model that puts comfort and convenience at the center of every decision.

02 Solution

The 2,900 SF two-floor fit-out presented immediate design challenges. The triangular footprint required extensive test-fit exploration to deliver the six exam rooms, procedure room, x-ray suite, and on-site lab the client needed within a geometry that resists conventional layouts. Along the high-traffic storefront wall, BHDP balanced patient privacy with daylighting using spandrel film to conceal the wall cavity and frosted film on small exam room windows. Linear lighting along the corridor edges replaced the standard overhead grid, sparing patients on stretchers the disorienting flash of lights overhead. Inclusive design carried through to the smallest details: a lowered x-ray window accommodates shorter staff, acoustical wall assemblies give every exam room genuine privacy, and a patient restroom with a direct pass-through to the lab streamlines testing.
