Martin-Gatton Agricultural Sciences Building designed by BHDP receives LEED Gold Certification
The University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton Agricultural Sciences Building was recently certified as a LEED Gold building by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). BHDP partnered with BC&E Engineering, CMTA Engineering, Bell Engineering, Congleton-Hacker, and THP to design this 66,000-SF facility, the first new building at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment in decades.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the USGBC’s green building certification system. The six major categories of the review include sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design.
The Agricultural Sciences Building’s LEED Gold achievement was driven by the materials and systems decisions that improved energy performance, including high-performing windows, efficient lighting, and optimized heating and cooling. This building was also highlighted for having a strong focus on the indoor environment.
“We are very proud and excited to have exceeded UK’s expectation of LEED Silver at no additional cost to the client by making smart design decisions and working collaboratively with the entire design and construction team to deliver LEED Gold,” said Alejandro J. Medina, Client Leader at BHDP.
The Martin-Gatton Agricultural Sciences Building is a central hub for teaching and student engagement at the University of Kentucky, featuring 18 classrooms, collaboration spaces, and other student-focused services.
This achievement brings BHDP Architecture to a total of 56 LEED-certified projects, with 16 being LEED Gold, further demonstrating an ongoing commitment to sustainable design and the creation of high-performing environments.
