College of Pharmacy Student Learning Center
01 Challenge
The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy sought to modernize its learning environment to match the demands of its highly ranked PharmD and undergraduate programs. Existing classroom and student spaces were limited in both size and flexibility, making it difficult for faculty to implement team-based, active-learning instruction across core courses.
02 Solution
The design team transformed underutilized space in the Riffe Building into the Vrable Center for Pharmacy Excellence, a modern, two-floor learning environment. The renovation introduced accessible, technology-equipped classrooms alongside dedicated student spaces, creating a seamless connection between academic instruction and community life within the college.

03 Results
The 19,766 SF renovation dramatically expanded the college’s teaching and student life capacity. Two new 150-seat active-learning classrooms on the second floor, joined by an existing renovated classroom on the first, allow faculty to deliver integrated, team-based instruction across most core BSPS courses without competing for learning environment space. A 2,200 SF student lounge, kitchenette, five group study rooms, and a second-floor seating area with views of Ohio Stadium more than tripled the space available for students to gather, study, and collaborate.
