Inpatient Pharmacy
01 Challenge
UC Health's existing inpatient pharmacy was ready for a refresh to better align with the hospital's needs. Over the years, various updates had resulted in a layout that wasn't fully optimized, with some equipment mismatches and limited visibility across operations. Managing inventory required extra steps, and the space had limited capacity to support modern workflows or automation. With growing demands, UC Health aimed to create a centralized, modern environment that would foster collaboration, enable automation, and adapt to evolving needs.
02 Solution
With UC Health, BHDP designed a state-of-the-art pharmacy within UC Health's surgery tower, featuring an open, collaborative layout and integrated XR2 robotic dispensers. The cleanroom was reimagined to improve visibility and workflow, with the ante room positioned for optimal compounding efficiency. Pneumatic tube systems were optimized for faster medication delivery, and VDC coordination helped navigate tight ceiling constraints, ensuring the space was both high-performing and flexible.

UC Health’s newly renovated inpatient pharmacy is transforming care from the inside out. Now one of the few hospitals in the region with two XR2 robotic systems, UC Medical Center has taken a major step forward in delivering medications safely and efficiently. With robotics assisting in the distribution of more than half of the hospital’s 15,000 daily doses, pharmacists are spending more time on the floor—enabling greater collaboration with care teams, more direct interaction with patients, and an increased focus on safety and accuracy.
